Become a SABA-GA Board Member!

SABA-GA will have two (2) board positions to fill come 2016, and as always, we're looking for current members who are interested in answering the call and helping to move this organization forward.  Each position is for a three-year renewable term. The elections meeting will be hosted by Morris, Manning, & Martin at 6 pm.

Please start thinking about running for the board - don't wait for someone to nominate you.  Step up and nominate yourself.  Of course, if you know someone who would make a good board member, you can also nominate them.  A profile of the current board is here.  To be eligible, you must be a paid SABA-GA member, and admitted and in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

You can download nomination forms here, and nominations are due January 22, 2016.  We will share additional details in the coming weeks, but if you have specific questions in the meantime, please contact us for further information

Save the Date - Being South Asian in Post 9/11 America: A Book Talk and Discussion with Deepa Iyer (Luncheon)

Join us on December 9th, 2015 for a dialogue over lunch with Deepa Iyer, a South Asian American attorney, activist and writer. Deepa’s new book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future, is an important read for those of us in the legal profession. Iyer’s book, influenced by 15 years of her work with South Asian immigrant communities, brings today’s news headlines into sharp focus. Iyer traces the continuing impact of post 9/11 immigration policies, anti-Muslim sentiment, and racial anxiety through the stories of young South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh activists.  Iyer’s book also places post 9/11 America in a larger context - that of America’s changing racial demographics. As communities of color grow in population size, how will they gain economic, political and cultural power and equity? What are the roles of South Asian, Arab and Muslim immigrants in fostering multiracial unity by centralizing Black liberation? Iyer’s book examines these questions in light of post 9/11 America, the changing racial landscape, and today’s people-centered movements for social change.

Currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for Social Inclusion, Iyer served as the director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) for a decade. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Al-Jazeera, andColorlines. Iyer is the recipient of awards from the South Asian Bar Association of North America  (2014) and the South Asian Bar Association of New York (2015).

During the lunch conversation on December 9th, Iyer will provide remarks about policy and legal issues framed in her new book and the role of South Asian lawyers.

Lunch details to follow shortly.
